Our company’s story begins with J. Raymond Bird who founded
Bird Engineering Company in 1942. The company quickly became
a leading manufacturer of radio frequency instrumentation
with the early products being termination wattmeters, loads,
filters, and coaxial selector switches . The founder has
40 US and foreign patents to his credit. One of his most
important and probably most useful was a simple way to
measure radio frequency (RF) both forward and reflected
power in coaxial transmission lines. His "Thruline® Principle" became
the industry standard method and is the basis for the Model
43 Thruline® Wattmeter that was introduced in 1952. The Model
43 has become an industry standard tool for RF power measurement
with over 292,000 of these units sold into the marketplace
since its introduction.
